The Institute of Optics and Quantum Electronics edited the field of the interaction of extremely intense laser radiation in a large range with working groups on three chairs and a C3-professorship. The research bandwith ranges from phase-stabilized single cycle pulses up to petawatt-class laser performance, photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and polarimetry. The Institute has a unique technological competence in this area.
In addition, the Institute is also involved in teaching with courses for beginners, major and minor students, as well as lectures for higher terms including master's degrees. A broad spectrum of topics is covered in optics, ranging from the basics of optics, nonlinear optics and X-ray physics to relativistic optics.
The Institute is linked in many ways. Locally it is participated with the interdepartmental Center for Medical Optics and Photonics (ZeMOP) such as the Abbe Center for Photonics. There is also a very close connection to the Helmholtz-Institute Jena. Equally formative for many of our research topics is the co-operation with the universities of Munich and Düsseldorf in the area of the Collaborative Research Centre project TransRegio 18 of the DFG. At European level, the participation with the LaserLab Europe and the major projects ELI and HiPER can be mentioned.
